Janet Hulstrand
Janet Hulstrand, writer, editor, writing coach and teacher, talked about her new book, "Demystifying the French: How to Love Them, and Make Them Love You (What you've heard about them is not entirely true...)."
It’s her second book (her first was Moving On: A Practical Guide to Downsizing the Family Home). Demystifying the French is a practical guide aimed at first-time visitors to France as well as long-term expatriates: it is designed to help readers "crack the code," avoid common mistakes, and get off on the right foot with the French. At this Après Midi, she read from her book and answered questions about her approach to getting along better in France by acknowledging (and accepting, and appreciating) what “makes the French tick.”
Janet read selected passages from the book, gave us some insights into her own viewpoint on the French and opened up the floor to questions. In her chapter, "The (Relative) Unimportance of Money," she provides a "Bonus Tip": "One of the things Americans really don't get about the French is that they don't respond in the same way to 'money talking' as people in many other cultures. It is not true that you can just buy a French person's cooperation. In fact, trying to do so many even be counterproductive, because many French people find the exertion of this kind of pressure both obnoxious and insulting to their sense of dignity. In general they prefer to extend favors because they think it is the right thing to do, or because they have respect and/or compassion for the person in need of help, rather than because they are being paid for it."
As you can imagine, a very lively discussion ensued. Everyone has something to say about our differences and how we have managed them!
Janet divides her time between Essoyes, a village in southern Champagne, and various parts of the United States. She writes frequently for Bonjour Paris, France Today, France Revisited, and for her blog, Writing from the Heart, Reading for the Road. She created, and has taught “Paris Through the Eyes of Travelers” for the City University of New York in Paris nearly every summer since 1997, and since 2008 she has also led “Writing from the Heart” workshop/retreats in the French countryside.
