Hilary Kaiser

Hilary Kaiser, PhD, oral historian and retired associate professor of Intercultural Communication at the University of Paris, spoke at length along with an entertaining slide-show, about her book, French War Brides: Mademoiselle and the American Soldier, which came out in a new paperback and e-book edition in May 2017 with the Paris Writers Press. The book was based on archival research done in both the U.S. and France as well as oral history interviews.

The book was first published in French as Des Amours de GI's by Editions Tallandier and later in English as French War Brides in America by Praeger Publications. She is also the author of the paperback and e-book WWII Voices: American GI's and the French Women Who Married Them. In addition to being an author, Hilary wears a number of other hats; she is a cross-cultural trainer, a former associate professor and researcher, an oral historian, a lecturer, a storyteller, a playwright, a world traveler, a travel blogger, a humanitarian volunteer and an associate professor emeritus at the University of Paris.

Hilary was recently interviewed by journalist Janet Hulstrand for Bonjour Paris: “On Intercultural Communication, French War Brides and More: Interview with Author Hilary Kaiser” which says so much about Hilary, but we learned an amazing amount of information about the soldiers during both World Wars, the women with whom they fell in love and married, and how it all fit into the social structure of those times. And one thing we learned for sure...not much has changed about the cultural differences or how men are motivated!
