Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Ever since Barack Obama took office, political debate has turned into whining about the economy. Political debate is certainly more entertaining!

Today marks his 100th day as President of the United States. The press is making the most of it -- that, along with the Swine Flu, as it threatens to become pandemic. (I personally never worry about such diseases -- crossing a Paris street is way more likely to be my cause of death!)

But, no one can argue that Monsieur O. executed his presidential campaign using high level Internet-based communication skills, and so once again, he's showing off his ability to communicate with the people by posting an interactive map of the good ol' U.S. of A.
outlining the progress, not "he" has made, but that "we" have made (have you noticed that it's never about "I," but always about "we?"), on his Web site at http://my.barackobama.com/100days

Call it propaganda ("information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause")...I don't mind. It's at least good news and we can all use a little bit of that these days.

Meanwhile, I received another bit of propaganda -- the first I've personally seen its kind since Monsieur O. took office -- ANTI Barack Obama. Someone sent it as "general information," apologizing at the same time for 'insulting' my intelligence. Actually, it was pretty amusing, from an American-living-in-Europe point of view, that is.

I quote from the text:

Ok, let me get this straight. We live in a 'global society,' yet we aren't supposed to consider anyone or anything beyond our shores? Oh yeah, that's going to get us far in this world, huh? And guess that means all of us out here on the other side of the Atlantic don't matter, either, right?

And I quote:

Oh yes. I remember that speech a few weeks ago. He was the first to actually apologize for our (American) "failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world." And went on to accuse Europe of "an anti-Americanism that is at once casual, but can also be insidious."

These words were music to the ears of an American living in Europe who spent eight years embarrassed by both...the failure by America to appreciate Europe and Europe's anti-American feelings. There we were, caught in the middle. It wasn't a fun position in which to be.

You know, that's one of those things that has always been puzzling. We were told the U.S. was a 'secular' country. Instead, we pledged allegiance to the flag..."one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all." The French call the concept of separation of church and state as "Laïcité" -- "the absence of religious involvement in government affairs as well as absence of government involvement in religious affairs," and is more than mere rhetoric. In fact, it's the reason all religious symbols were outlawed from being worn/displayed in the public schools a few years ago that caused so much commotion!

And lastly, I quote:

Yeah, just like his predecessor?

The author is Posey Moore Nash, Phoenix, Arizona. Look her up. They call her "Nosey Posey." I wonder if she would think it anti-American to go off U.S. soil and actually visit Paris? Or if Paris ever had the 'pleasure?'
