Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Many times a week I walk up narrow curving rue Debelleyme northbound toward rue de Bretagne and gaze up at the Trompe l'Oeil painted windows on the facade of the building in front of me and ridiculously get fooled again and again.

"Trompe l'Oeil" literally means "trick the eye." It is an art technique that creates an apparently realistic image as a type of optical illusion. The term comes from the Baroque, but its origins date back much further. Usually it refers to paintings on walls that create a deliberate attempt at false perspectives.

This building in Barcelona is a perfect example of well-executed Trompe l'Oeil on an exterior wall, but it can also be found on tables and other items of furniture, where it may look like a game being played with cards or other illusions. If you have ever visited Le Château de Versailles, then you have seen some of Trompe l'Oeil at is best.

Funnily, Trompe l'Oeil is featured in many episodes of Looney Tunes, such as the Road Runner cartoons, where Wile E. Coyote paints a tunnel on a rock wall and the road runner races through the fake tunnel. This is usually followed by the coyote foolishly trying to run through the tunnel after the road runner, only to smash into the hard rock -- LOL (Laugh Out Loud).

One of the premier artists of Trompe l'Oeil is Yves Lanthier, a native of Québec, Canada and current resident of Florida who discovered his talent at the age of six, while sketching a portrait of his teacher in the Rembrandt style. He is well known for his large oil paintings and elaborate staircase settings on the ceilings and walls of the living areas in numerous East Coast mansions. Last December, a book about his life and most prominent work was published by F&W Publications entitled "The Art of Trompe l'Oeil Murals."

This coming December, Yves Lanthier comes to Paris to teach his craft to a very select group of aspiring and willing-to-be-inspired artists. Hosted by Parler Paris (!), from December 29, 2005 to January 2, 2006, "The Art of Trompe l'Oeil Workshop" will include a Welcome Reception, a guided tour to Versailles, a guided tour of the Paris Hôtel de Ville (by invitation of the City of Paris!), a New Year's Eve sparkling and sumptuous dinner at the historic Chez Jenny, three full days of painting with the master and a Certificate of Completion!

The 15th anniversary of this annual summer outdoor film festival includes films such as "Night of the Hunter," "Pulp Fiction" and "Short Cuts."

Leonard Pitt, author of the bestselling "Promenades dans le Paris Disparu," and founder of the Berkeley Chocolate Club, will be in Paris for one month, September 15 to October 16, and is now organizing small groups for walks through the city.

Walk 1. Left Bank. Begins at St. Germain des Prés and ends at Square Viviani across from Notre Dame.

Walk 2. Ile de la Cité.
Walks 1 and 2 give a first-hand view of the making of modern Paris under Baron Haussmann. The effect of standing on a corner with a photo in hand of 19th century Paris brings home the full impact of the city's transformation as the Baron's pickaxe tore down 20,000 houses to make way for the great boulevards and avenues that define Paris today.

Walk 3. The Marais.
Begins in Place des Vosges and explores the unknown history of the Marais south of rue Saint-Antoine from the 1920s to the 1950s. A mixture of anti-Semitism plus a blockheaded approach to urban planning was a disaster to this quarter. The casual stroller has no idea of the dramas played out at virtually every corner.

Walk 4. Paris and Chocolate.
This walk combines Paris history plus visits to three of Paris's premium chocolate houses. We begin on the grounds of the Louvre and look at how the creation of the Louvre as we know it resulted from a tragic accident. Then we walk to the garden of the Palais Royal to see how one man's debauchery lead to the creation of that great architectural gem, the covered passageway. From there we walk across the street to two of the most beautiful passageways borne of this debauchery, Passages Vivienne and Colbert. Then up rue Vivienne with a stop at Debauve and Gallais to purchase some chocolate on our way to a wonderful network of passages including Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy and Passage Verdeaux. Exiting the passages we make our second chocolate stop at Mère de la Famille. A short bus ride to Place de l'Opera takes us into the making of modern Paris and the great history of the Grands Boulevards. We'll then continue up the boulevard to the famous La Maison du Chocolate, make our final purchase of this food of the gods and repair to a cafe for our tasting, to compare, criticize, rate, and above all enjoy.

The exhibit features Jan's display of stunning photos of Paris by night and mouthwatering close-ups of food by day, as well as a few surprise images added for good measure.

The exhibit, "Première a Paris," will run from September 19 through November 10, and the Vernissage will be Thursday, September 22, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

I've often noticed how at this time of year, at least some of the places I've lived, that the light changes as the Sun crosses the Leo to Virgo cusp. Something is obviously different; it looks and feels like late summer Sun.

Virgo is a mutable sign. Mutable means changeable. It can take different forms, sometimes assertive, sometimes passive, and often differing. All the seasons end with one of these mutables, when one season dissolves into the next; speaking for the Northern Hemisphere, Gemini ends the springtime, Virgo ends the summer, Sagittarius ends autumn and Pisces ends winter. The astrological signs represent the oldest and most mysterious dimension of astrology -- and also one of the more obvious. They are the basic archetypes of human experience, as we experience it, you might say the trump cards of the astrological system. We usually think of city planning as the result of a process of reason and deliberation. And it is. But in the case of Paris, the layout of much of the city was triggered by raw violent emotion. Come hear the stories and see the images behind Les Halles, the Louvre, Palais Royal, and the Left Bank presented by one of the Bay Area's most passionate Francophiles.

Act 2: Chocolate Awakening
We'll begin with a brief overview of the history of chocolate. Then from a selection of five bars of premium chocolate we'll taste, criticize, rate, and above all enjoy. Liking chocolate is one thing. Tasting a variety, comparing them, is a revelatory experience that deepens our own choco appreciation while opening us up to the subtleties and nuances of this food of the gods.
