Dear Parler Paris Reader,

My mother always told me, "You have to suffer to be beautiful," and the joke goes that "I've been suffering ever since." If I ever divulged all the things I (like many women) have done over the years to 'be beautiful,' you'd think the list was akin to what's required in the renovation of a 17th-century apartment (of which I am very familiar), having to virtually reconstruct and decorate every aspect of the "surface" (space).

At last month's Parler Paris Après Midi, "SuperCils" expert and "Kiwi" (New Zealander), Wendy Newman, made one of those 'offers one can't refuse' for a session to extend my eyelashes that would last the life of my natural lashes -- about one month.

Not that my eyelashes are particularly sparse, but being the kind of person who 'will do anything at least once' (almost anything, that is), I said, "Yes, I'd be delighted," and so a date was set for this past Monday evening. Wendy assured me that it wouldn't take long (1.5 hours) and that it involved no pain or discomfort whatsoever.

We poured each other a glass of cold white wine and while we sipped on our "apéritifs," she asked me to lie down on the bed with my head at the foot so that she could sit behind my head and work her wonders. With a palette of various size fake lashes, tweezers, glue and other tools, she attached one false lash at a time, me barely noticing except for a tiny bit of tickling as she joked that she was adding "size E falsies" -- meaning long, thick lashes that would make a big change from my natural ones.

During the process, to dissipate the vapors from the glue, Wendy used a little rubber air pump to aerate my eyelids. That was about as much as was needed to remove any discomfort. One-and-a-half hours later, she acknowledged the completion of the 'surgery' and without feeling anything different at all different, the change was dramatic. "Yes," she said, "you can wash your face, bath or shower as you normally do. There's no need for mascara and I promise you, you'll become addicted to having them -- just like you are to your acrylic nails. Expect them to last between one and two months -- the life of your normal lashes as they fall out with them. What's so amazing, too, is that they look so natural, not like a string of false lashes you purchase in the drug store or cosmetic counter.

At Parler Paris Après Midi yesterday, a few people remarked that I was looking particularly nice that day, without realizing what was the change -- like when a man shaves his beard and you can't be sure why his face looks different. Last night at dinner* with friends, a very astute and beautiful woman who has obviously never 'suffered' like I have, but who knows everything there is to know about being beautiful, noticed immediately, but the average person would never know they weren't my own.

Wendy became an "Auto-Entrepreneur" to start her SuperCils business here in Paris and will come to your home for an additional charge of 25€. Otherwise, you could have a whole new look for just 50€ when you travel to her studio for the session. A salon would be double the price, and perhaps not as much fun as letting Wendy give you a 'face lift' without surgery, pain or the risk of permanent damage.

*Dinner was a delight at Chez André, one of those rare old-fashioned bistrots just off the Champs-Elysées (12 rue Marbeuf 8th Arr., +33 (0) 1.47.20.59.57) where you can have a traditional French meal among the residents of the neighborhood, rather than the tourists from the avenue. Frommer's writes that "This has been a landmark on rue Marbeuf since 1937. It remains as it was when it was founded (thanks to an agreement made with the original owners). The old-style cuisine on the menu includes pâté of thrush, frogs' legs, grilled veal kidneys, roast rack of lamb, fresh shellfish, and on Fridays, bouillabaisse. Several reasonably priced wines are offered as well." I had the frogs' legs, being a 'swamp frog' myself. "Delish."

A la prochaine...
