“Cocktails And Dinner On Paris’ “”Crime Boulevard”””

Yesterday amidst the pouring rain I detoured into Chez Jenny, the Alsacienne Brasserie near place de la République, to discuss the menu for dinner on June 18th with Franck, their man in charge of special events.

Chez Jenny, now owned by Les Frères Blanc (also owners of Le Procope, La Fermette Marbeuf and Chez Clément), has quite an interesting history. At the colonial exhibition in 1930, Robert Jenny, a native of Strasbourg, had a kiosk where he sold produce from his region — salt-pickled cabbage choucroute, sausages and beer. He came to appreciate Parisian life and noting that the fine Alsatian products attracted the Parisians, he decided to set up business in the city. He settled on number 39 boulevard du Temple which was the hall where the former Victor ball was held and had once been a Russian restaurant in 1906, then a Belgian restaurant in 1914. The “quartier” had the reputation of “Crime Boulevard” in the 18th-century when the plays running at the time in the many theaters in the area mainly drew inspiration from current news items.

This coming June 18th, Thirza Vallois, author of “Around and About Paris,” Volumes I, II and III and “Romantic Paris,” who has credentials a mile long and an ability to see history in layers that never ceases to spellbind her audiences during her brilliant lectures, is likely to tell us other sordid tales of Chez Jenny during the past century over dinner! She has agreed to give us a complete tour of Paris — of all 20 arrondissements in words and pictures — Thirza’s personal account of the past, present and future of Paris.

The menu I chose?…We start with Kir Edelzwicker d’Alsace and Canapés, then after we’ve all mingled and gotten to know one another, we’ll sit at round tables for six for the first course — a choice between Marbré de Légumes à la Coriandre, Salades Vertes Mélangées or Terrine de Canard aux Olives, followed by the main course, Dos de Saumon Rôti Fondue de Fenouil Frais. Then over dessert of Crème Brûlée Caramélisée à la Cassonade, accompanied by Wine (red, rosé or white) or Mineral Water and lastly, Coffee, Thirza will wow us with her profound knowledge and insight. (Anyone who has ever heard her lecture know this is no exaggeration.)

The event is part of the upcoming Working and Living in France Conference (June 18 – 20, 2004), but guests of conference participants and EVERYONE in Paris is invited to attend. The cost, all inclusive is $75 (about 61 euros).

Now’s the time to reserve your place, as we’ve got to give Franck a proper count very soon, so be sure to email Schuyler Hoffman at [email protected] or click here to reserve automatically using our online secure server.

Hope to see you there, mingling, of course!

A la prochaine…

The International Players present in English

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By William Shakespeare

Directed by Graham Bushnell who has also directed “Twelfth Night” for
the Jardin de Shakespeare in Paris. The original music is composed by
John Dawkins, musical director and conductor of the Melo’men choir and
the Symphony Rainbow Orchestra.

The production will be part of the festivities to celebrate the 1300
years of the town of Le Pecq and also the centenary of the Entente
Cordiale.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream occupies a special place in the works of
Shakespeare: its contrasting worlds of dream and reality, its mixture
of high and low comedy and its lyric beauty give it a timeless appeal.
This production never loses sight of Shakespeare’s original intention:
to tell a good story and to entertain.

Chez Jenny: “An authentic Brasserie with a soul, a style and a history.”

Appreciating Parisian life and noting that the fine Alsatian products attracted the Parisians, this native of Strasbourg sought to set up business in the capital. He found just the right place not far from the place de la République, at number 39 boulevard du Temple. This was the hall where the form
er

Victor ball was held. Did he know that this address had once been that of a Russian restaurant in 1906, then a Belgian restaurant in 1914 ?

The quarter was lively, even though it no longer deserved the reputation of «Crime Boulevard» that it had had in the 18th century, when the plays billed at the many theatres in the area mainly drew inspiration from the items in the news.

talk about
Hollywood and the Blacklist….
and the NEW American Blacklist

Screenwriters Norma Barzman and her husband Ben were driven from
Hollywood during the post-war McCarthyite witch-hunt into a 30-year

Blacklist” released last year, a chilling story with a star-studded
list of characters.

Betsy Blair, blacklisted American actress and Oscar winner for her
role in “Marty,” and former wife of Gene Kelly, tells her story in
“The Memory of All That: Love and Politics in New York, Hollywood and
Paris.”

There¹s a new blacklist afoot in America, censorship in the form of
corporate media. Norma and Betsy will help us connect the dots.

“So what’s the Presidential campaign really about? ‘The economy, stupid’? Or ‘the war, stupid’? Jobs? Or terrorism?

The real issue here is “honesty, stupid!” What cost Aznar his job in Spain was a clumsy attempt to blame Basque separatists and suppress evidence that Al Qaeda was behind a horrendous terrorist attack. That wasn’t a victory for terrorists. It was a defeat for government hypocrisy.

So listen up, candidate Kerry, and President Bush. On the economy and on terrorism, it’s hypocrisy Americans don’t like…” Barber Broadcast on Marketplace on March 22, 2004
